D&R Greenway Preserves

Woodens Lane

Hunterdon County

The 43-acre Woodens Lane Preserve is a largely agricultural tract that includes an approximately 12-acre coniferous forest and a mature windbreak that separates the two main fields.  The land slopes downward from northeast to southwest, providing a view of the preserved Bald Pate Mountain range. This preserve is a priority for land stewardship. D&R Greenway works with volunteers to re-establish forest in a gap area to extend habitat for forest interior species.

The preserve is comprised of hayfields, forest, and a mature hedgerow.  The hayfields are part of an almost 90-acre grassland complex, meeting the minimum size requirement for area-sensitive grassland birds, many of which are State-listed as threatened or species of concern.  The forested area is dominated by full mature red cedars with a minor component of deciduous hardwoods.  Located adjacent to and partially interspersed with open fields, these cedars provide suitable roosting habitat for species such as eastern screech owl, saw-whet owl, and State-threatened long-eared owl.  The mature trees that comprise the windbreak are excellent perch sites for a variety foraging raptors that hunt fields and feed on small rodents.
