Authenticated sketch by Pierre Eugène Du Simitière, courtesy of the Museum of the American Revolution

From a story in The Philadelphia Inquirer – during the 1970s, a New York antiquities dealer found this previously unknown sketch, in the New Jersey home of a doctor who treated artists during the Revolution. An inscription alongside the sketch reads: “an exact representation of a waggon belonging to the north carolina brigade of continental troops which passed thro Philadelphia”

Thank you for your support of our Spirit of 1778 Reenactment Party! In the hot summer months of June 1778, over 10,000 Continental Soldiers encamped in Hopewell, NJ for three days on the road to what would be known as the Battle of Monmouth. For those three days, thousands of American patriots would rest and rejuvenate in beautiful Hopewell Valley from fighting for the independence of our country.

For inspiration and ideas on dressing like an Extra, as we create a very special video story, we’ve pulled together some resources to help you discover what people wore during the late 18th century.

Guests are encouraged to dress for the time period to be featured in the video OR come as they are to enjoy the celebration.  Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

A detail from Charles Willson Peale’s portrait of Colonel Walter Stewart (2nd Pennsylvania Regiment), shows a marquee with ridge decorations, two wall tents, and lines of common tents. Muskets are laid on a rack in the left foreground while the guard posts feature stacked muskets. The camp is austere, with no excess baggage (chairs, benches, trunks, etc.) visible. Peale probably first sketched this camp in spring 1781 when the Pennsylvania regiments were stationed in Lancaster, Pa. (Peale’s bill for the camp sketch was dated 23 May 1781). Edward W.
