Hopewell orphan finds hope in the land of her childhood

Life has left Josephine “Jo” Allen with many battle scars, but she found healing in the land which once held turmoil for her. From 5 to 9 years old, Allen was a resident of St. Michael’s Orphanage and Industrial School in Hopewell. Closed in 1973, the orphanage’s land has since become the St. Michaels Farm Preserve — an area of more than 400 acres of farm fields and forests preserved in 2010 and expanded in 2017 by D&R Greenway Land Trust. Princeton, N.J. —   D&R Greenway Land Trust recently concluded the purchase of a small but important Hopewell property adjacent to Cedar Ridge, one of the land trust’s earliest and biggest preserves, at more than 200 acres. D&R Greenway collects last-minute donations for Bridgewater preservation effort

Bridgewater’s 36-acre Wemple/Lang property is an important local treasure. This historic land on Foothill and Steele Gap Roads sits along routes taken by George Washington’s Continental Army throughout the American Revolution. It later was the home of William Lester Wemple, a noted public official in the early 20th century.
