John Rassweiler Impact Lecture by Dr. Andrew Pershing of Climate Central – Our Charity

This program takes place on the 20th Anniversary of the opening of the Johnson Education Center on April 30, 2006. Since that time, the Johnson Education Center, on D&R Greenway’s Conservation Campus, has become an important resource for the community, area non-profits and artists, and offers educational initiatives and programs. D&R Greenway’s Native Plant Nursery serves the public by offering seasonal native plant sales to support local diversity by providing crucial food and habitat for native birds, pollinators, and wildlife.
John Rassweiler, for whom this lecture is named, was one of the earliest trustees of D&R Greenway Land Trust. His strategic guidance ensured a growing organization with clear goals and solid results. He led development of the land trust’s first trails in the Sourland Ecosystem Preserve and left a legacy that is a benefit to us all. John’s foresight and actions left a significant impact on where D&R Greenway Land Trust is today, as one of the leading land trusts in the country.
There is growing evidence that one of the most effective things an individual can do to fight climate change is to talk about it with friends and family. Climate Central provides resources that help people communicate about climate change.
A key part of the strategy is to make climate local—to show how climate change affects us and the people and topics we care about. They do this by showing local trends, connecting climate with weather, and connecting climate with topics like allergies and sports that capture attention.
Their resources are free and are regularly used by major media sources, educators, and other non-profits to talk about the local impacts of climate change. https://www.climatecentral.org/resources
As chief program officer, Andrew Pershing, Ph.D. leads Climate Central’s climate science activity. His role includes bridging primary research and media analysis to amplify critical work on climate change and climate impacts and make it accessible to audiences around the world. As the director of attribution science and climate fingerprinting, Pershing is developing tools like the Climate Shift Index to quantify how climate change has increased the likelihood or severity of conditions in the atmosphere and ocean. He works closely with communications experts at Climate Central and partners to help the media and others to incorporate this information into their content.
“This lecture is fitting of John Rassweiler, a scientist who lived in Princeton and cared deeply about preserving the natural world,” says Linda Mead, President and CEO of D&R Greenway. “The first lecture we presented in honor of John featured George Dyson, son of Freeman Dyson, a renowned scientist at the Institute of Advance Study. We come full circle by presenting this timely topic as the culmination of Earth Day festivities.”
