Prescribed Burn at Cider Mill Grassland Preserve to Help to Promote Healthy Grasslands!

A note about our planned prescribed burn at Cider Mill Grassland Preserve

NJ Forest Fire Service will conduct a prescribed burn at Cider Mill Grassland Preserve in December 2025.

The NJ Forest Fire Service will conduct a prescribed burn near Amwell Road and Cider Mill Road.

We would like to notify you of a controlled prescribed burn that will take place at Cider Mill Grassland Preserve. The New Jersey Forest Fire Service will conduct a prescribed burn between now and December 31, 2025. You may remember that we held a prescribed burn in spring 2022 and this helped tremendously to increase native grasses and reduce pest populations (including ticks) on this important grassland. We also surveyed an increasing number of grassland birds.

The burn will last for one day, during which time the grasslands will be closed. The date of the burn will be determined by the NJ Forest Fire Service based on forecasted weather conditions, which must fall within a standard safe range. Signs will be posted at Amwell Road and on Cider Mill Road on the day of the burn.

The NJ Forest Fire Service is trained in conducting the fire to reduce smoke. However, nearby landowners are advised to keep their windows closed. After the burn, smoldering is normal to see, but flames increasing in size are not. If you see flames after the burn, please contact NJ Forest Fire Service at 609-292-2977.

Please email Tina Notas, Land Conservation Administrator, at tnotas@drgreenway.org should you have any questions.

Prescribed burn is a controlled application of fire by a team of experts to enhance desired plant communities and wildlife habitat and to reduce the risk of future wildfires. Every year, the New Jersey Forest Fire Service conducts prescribed burns while protecting life, property, and the state’s natural resources.

This land management technique is often used by conservation organizations throughout New Jersey to manage problematic invasive plant species, encourage native plant growth, and reduce thatch from years of mowing. We look forward to planting a wildflower meadow in the future.

The burn will last for one day. The fire will be lit, monitored and managed by the Forest Fire

Service officials who have undergone rigorous training. Signs will be posted on the day of the burn. The preserve remains closed to the public.

Fire has played an important part in shaping local plant and animal communities for thousands of years. Native Americans frequently utilized prescribed burns to reduce pests, increase grasses for game forage, and increase production of edible berry shrubs.
